Actually, I Can.

Good morning y’all,
I’m cuddled up on my moms bed this morning. I was feeling pretty good and scrolling through Tyra Banks’ Instagram when I came across this picture.

20140727-102956-37796367.jpg

And I was like Lordhavemercyhallelujahthankyoujesusamenforknowinghowterrifiediamaboutgoingtocollege. Petrified. Afraid. Frightened. Anxious. STRESSED OUT. Why? Because I just don’t know what to expect. What if I end up being the worst journalism major ever? Then I’ll have to come back here and tell all of you guys that (and how embarrassing would that be).

But just stumbling across that picture made me feel 3,456,725,357,864,256,971 times better. I just thought I’d share it with you all incase one of you needed to be reminded that you can. 🙂

THEMATTIX Art Gallery Opening

Last night at 909 West Magnolia street in the great city of Fort Worth there was an art gallery opening. THEMATTIX art gallery was born of local talents and properly celebrated with a killer DJ and even a live demo by Clif Mattix, the proprietor himself. Mattix made an amazing use of the space in the building and left no wall unsaturated by the eclectic and fascinating art that ranged from dark to western. Naturally NBN came out not only to support my momma (Joy Sanchez), but also to interview some of the artists that I could trick into letting me pester them for 10-20 minutes.

The first man you’d encounter at the front of the gallery was the DJ Jeff Langhammer AKA “Stigma”. He has a cool official interview in yesterdays Startelegram in the entertainment section, but he agreed to interview with little old me nonetheless. On gallery opening night he set the stage mood at the store front playing kid safe music in the street. He used to be into indie rock, (Which is actually a genre that is coming back strong lately.) however at the moment he’s into house and trap music. “I have a limited amount of time to listen to music. So I want to listen to what I like best while I can.” What is he all about? “Bringing atmosphere”, and boy did he bring it!

Charla Pavlick is the first artist I met and interviewed. She favors the mixed medium and at the moment is particularly partial to acrylic and old LIFE magazines from the sixties! Pavlick says she’s been an artist all her life and graduated from TCU with a degree in graphic design. She laughs saying, “There was that short amount of time where I was a flight attendant, but I got out of that pretty fast!” Pavlick’s favorite (and also a crowd favorite!) piece of hers in the gallery was a piece titled “Cowgirl” which showcases a sassy southern lady’s silhouette on a large canvas made with… You guessed it… Those life magazines and acrylic! When I asked Pavlick what her personal mantra was she remarked, “That’s a really good question!” Her final answer was, “I guess the thing I do tell myself every day is ‘Everything’s going to be okay’.”

Next I met a man named Paul Wolff (Whom I admittedly raved about for weeks before the gallery opened. No shame in my game.). His medium of choice is acrylic. Wolff claims that he has been an artist since childhood and says that even his kindergarten teachers remarked that he “might have a talent for art, and should be encouraged”. His “professional” beginning though would be after he graduated as an Art Major from Stephen F. Austin in 1990. “Before you were even born,” he said while laughing. Wolff’s favorite piece of his that was taken into the gallery was his Frank Zappa piece. Although he loves his newer musician pieces he’s ready to get back into something more conceptual for his next piece. When asked his mantra he explained to me, “I’ve come to a change in my life in the past year. I’m 46. I’m immersed in heart. I’m not a nine to five guy. I guess it would be that… Life might start at middle age, it’s not over at 30.”

The next character was such a pleasure to interview and it turns out he is not only a skilled light painting photographer, but also a selfie master. His name is Chad Davis. On top of his architectural photography gigs he has been an artist for 10 years and is a photographer. Each photo he takes is a 30 minute exposure photo where he runs in and lights up certain portions of the photo where he sees fit. Thus the term “light painting”. His favorite featured piece was his 15 minute photo at the Old Pearl Brewery in San Antonio. He explained to me that it’s very important to pre-plan the types of photos he takes and know your colors in advance because you may only get six chances in a single night to get it to come out the way you envisioned it. When asked his mantra I was given many answers. Here are my three favorites: 1.) “I work a lot.” 2.) “I can’t think of a mantra… I work too much.” 3.) “Try to keep up with Paul Wolff.”

Next up is Nick Kirk. His favorite medium? Simple He has no favorites of anything and in a single 2D work he uses between 4-6 different mediums anyway. Kirk completed his Fine Art degree and graduated from TCU in 2002. He then went into construction architecture for 5-6 years and got back into this type of art in 2010-2011. White Face Jackpot was not only a crowd favorite but his favorite work accepted into the gallery. When asked his mantra he didn’t skip a beat, “Move forward. Plain and simple.”

Bill Carter was all business when I walked up to him to ask for 10 minutes of interrogation. Carter has been a professional photographer for 18 years. The piece that I interviewed him in front of was “Forgotten Memories” and that was also his favorite piece picked for the gallery. This piece was made in an abandoned orphanage which may or may not be the result of some trespassing, however the world might never know. When I asked Bill Carter what he was all about he had two answers. 1.) “Hoping that I can information share.” 2.) “Hoping that I can inspire one person at least in a day.” After all the business was done I asked for a proper selfie. He said yes of course, but only after he put his shades on!

Shane Harrison was a very timid and friendly fellow that I had the distinct pleasure of interviewing. He is a digital artist that infuses his graphics with a sort of grungy-fun flair. I asked him how long he’s been and artist and he said, “Probably 30 years. Since I was a kid.” We took our photo together in front of his favorite work taken into the gallery that is titled “Peace Keeper”. Though Harrison is a man of few words his mantra resonated with me the most. His is to “Be fair with people. Treat others with respect.” He explained, “It’s something we could all do better… We’re all sharing this world.”

Shane

Last but not least is the man with the plan to make it all happen, Clif Mattix. At the moment Mattix’ favorite medium is spray paint. He laughed and remarked, “Right now. In this moment. 2014. Spray paint. 2013 was airbrush and it’ll probably be acrylic next.” He’s been an artist for 31 years and obviously has no intention of stopping any time soon. His favorite piece placed in the Gallery is “Breaking Bad”. Mattix’ personal mantra is “Find adventure everywhere.” Due to Mattix being a busy man that day I didn’t get to snap a picture with him until I took my heels off at the end of the day!

A very special thank you to Clif Mattix from the bottom of my heart for letting me interview all of these very special people for my NBN piece!

Until next time XOXO,

Warped Tour Dallas!

This summer is all about “broadening my horizons” or whatever. So I’ve been saying yes to just about everything at least once. So when my brother asked me to go to Warped Tour with him of course I said yes. When I told my friends I was going the first response I got in the group text read “Who are you!?”. Why? Because that’s totally not my scene.

At 10:00 a.m. I was dressed and ready to go to Warped with my siblings. I was armed with only my fanny pack, SPF 50, and limited knowledge of a few bands that were performing that day.

20140626-134507-49507457.jpg

Getting there was an ordeal. Traffic for the last few miles and when we could finally see the Gexa Energy pavilion my brother made a U turn and claimed to be going “the back way”. Which made us late so we missed seeing their favorite band The Real Friends. So the first band we saw was The Story So Far. They were amazing live AND my sister crowd surfed.

20140626-135552-50152866.jpg

Missing The Real Friends ruined my little sisters day… But we got to meet up with them and have them sign some CDs. (The bassist told me I had a sick fanny pack!) We also illegally snuck a selfie.

20140626-135142-49902015.jpg

After that we got to see Breathe Carolina perform. IT. MADE. MY. LIFE. They played a lot of their new stuff that was rad, but their very last song was Blackout and everyone was feeling it. The whole crowd was jumping and singing and getting it. I also appreciated how great they were at crowd involvement.

20140626-140009-50409727.jpg

While Morgan, Michaela, and I were watching Breathe Carolina my brother was busy meeting Echosmith! (Echosmith, after their set, became my current favorite band.)

Here he is with the band! (Cute little Sydney’s eyes are closed.)

20140626-140728-50848886.jpg

After that we did a little bit of shopping where I picked up this rad Warped tank.

20140626-140829-50909617.jpg

Then my sister and I say around for a bit at the Journey stage watching lots of bands play until my all time favorite band, Mayday Parade, came on at the Electric Soul stage. They played a lot of old favorites including my absolute favorite, Black Cat. Then during the last song in their set I found the guts to crowd surf.

20140626-141934-51574567.jpg

20140626-141934-51574112.jpg

Then my sister and I sat around at the Journeys Stage while my brother shopped to kill time until Echosmith came on. I’m positive that I was hooked the second Sydney said a single word, and I was positively obsessed with them by the time their set was over.
The song of theirs that gets featured on the radio is linked below!

After their set we left and stopped at sonic on the way home. We were all very sweaty and very exhausted. Here’s my end of day selfie.

I got the best sleep of my life and some of the best memories ever…
That is, until I went to New York and made even more memories to share with you. 😉

The Rise of the Idolization of Idiotic White Boys

Hello NBN and welcome to our first take over. Grace Safarik, whom you might remember from a post called This Blog Post is Not About the Beauty in Grace’s Eyes, has submitted her article today to address something serious… THE INTERNET. More specifically though, the people we idolize as “INTERNET FAMOUS”. (Just a disclaimer: We do not hate all of you “white boys” out there.) At first when Grace came to me about wanting to write a piece for my site we were texting around midnight and she said, “I wanted to write an article for your blog, and then I was like. It’s Nothing But Nealie. Not ‘usually Nealie but there was that one time Grace wrote an article about the rise of the idolization of stupid white boys’.” Being the literary genius I am my educated and well thought out response was “OMG PLEASE DO IT”… So without further ado I will let Grace TAKE OVER:

Recently, a video surfaced of “vine famous” Taylor Caniff describing his thoughts on gay relationships. He assured his viewers in the beginning of the thirty-second clip, “I don’t have anything against gay people.” All before ever so eloquently revealing his belief that everything they do is “f***** up”. He continued to show off his gift of gab on twitter… Where he told his ONE MILLION followers that “everyone is aloud (yes, aloud… not allowed.) an opinion”. This tweet received six thousand “retweets” and twenty-one thousand “favorites”. Well since I’m “aloud” an opinion, Nealie graciously agreed to let me share it on her blog, and it’s VERY clear and VERY strong. The amount of young girls obsessing over these newly famous vine stars is mind-boggling, ridiculous, and upsetting. On vine, Taylor Caniff has 1.4 million followers, and averages about seventy thousand “likes” and thirty thousand “revines”. His friend Nash Grier has 8.5 million. Cameron Dallas 4.9 million. These boys have influence… Influence that has not been used wisely. In December of last year, Grier and Dallas, along with another “vine star” J.C. Caylen (700,000) caught some heat for uploading a video describing what they think boys look for in girls. In a mere 9 minutes those three boys reinforced every unattainable and negative beauty standard, with millions of young girls’ attention. They cannot take those words back, and the video still exists on other people’s YouTube accounts for girls to view in their quest to become everything Nash Grier and his handsome “baby blues” want. In the short time Vine has been around (launched January 24, 2013) the criteria for “Vine Celebrity” has been set. The traits for “Vine Celebrity” consist of abs, eyes, and a willingness to do ANYTHING in public on camera… no matter how uncomfortable it makes the people around them. They make a career out of this “celebrity” and tour the country. Girls pay money to go take pictures with them. There are hundreds of comments on everything they post. They sell out nightclubs. They cause hysteria and mobs. Abs, eyes, and an air of pretension is all it seems to take to influence the next generation of women.

XOXO,
Usually Nealie but…
There was that one time that Grace took over.

NBNews!

Hey NBN! I haven’t posted in a while because I went to Warped tour and then had vacation in New York!

The next posts that will be up are about Warped and New York however I am not working on them yet because…..

NBN IS GETTING A MAKEOVER!

I’m trying to format things the way I like them and it’s not easy because I am not by any means a technological genius!

Bear with me and see what’s in store!

Graduation and the Rest of My Life.

Hi, hello, how are you on this dandy/peachy/fine Friday the 13th afternoon my loves? I’ve been indoors all day hiding from the outside world. Why? Because… Well… I’m your average every day bad luck Chuck. So it’s best that I don’t venture out into the strangeness that is society on a day like today. However this day in all its horrifying glory could simply not keep me away from what I love best. Writing a little blog for you.

On June 5th I had the pleasure of walking across a stage in front of the friends and families of my classmates in a blue cap and gown. That’s considered a very important time in every young adults life. The ceremonial transition into actual real life adulthood. (Which is actually false. Actual real life adulthood starts as soon as a person gets over their “black out drunk” nights, and waking up next to strangers just for the record.) This 6 second walk is what four years of crying over tests, significant others, family drama, mean teachers, and failed last minute projects all boils down to. “If all that is true then what seems to be the problem Nealie?” I AM EVER SO DELIGHTED THAT YOU ASKED. I have no idea what my problem is, but I’m caught somewhere between really enjoying my summer and stressing about starting college in the fall. Which I have heard is pretty typical aaaaaaaand I’m rambling. ANYWAYTHEPOINTIS: I’m beyond glad to be done with high school and get on to the rest of my life… I just don’t know how I’m feeling about staring into the face of my future at age 18. I can hardly keep myself from wearing crop tops to places that it’s simply not appropriate to wear crop tops to, and I’m expected to function as a regular part of society now?

I know that I’ll worry less once I start working again. (Oh yeah, little update I’m currently unemployed because I’m going out of town next week and moving the week after that.) BUT FOR NOW… I’m all over the place and seeing every single friend I possibly can before we all head separate ways.

Here are some pics from grad:
